Taylor and Travis
I asked my wife what I should write about this week and her response was “Taylor and Travis.” My response was, of course, “nope!” I will not bring myself to disgrace these hallowed pages with nonsense about two people who have decided to do something as mundane as date. Why should we care about it? It happens millions of times every day so why is this couple so special? I refuse to do it!
If I were going to take the time to write about this enamored duo, this is where I would normally have the “for those of you who don’t know…” bit. Taylor and Travis are pretty common names. In theory, I could just be talking about that adorable young couple up the block. I’m not though. Does anyone really not know about this couple du jour? If you are one of those people, then God bless you. Teach me your ways. And for those of you who don’t know, Taylor and Travis are none other than Taylor Swift, singer-songwriter extraordinaire, and Travis Kelce, tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs. These two superstars in their respective industries have decided to give a relationship a go and it appears that the world could not be happier about it. Not me though, I’m not happy about it and I will not take the time to write or even think about their relationship.
The fact of the matter is, I just don’t need to be writing about these two. If you really are interested in this kind of thing (and amazingly, there are plenty of people who are), there is no shortage of coverage for you to consume. If you do a quick Google search of “Taylor and Travis,” you are met with results containing up to the minute reporting from some pretty big-name sources. All from within the past few hours of writing this, you have Rolling Stone saying, “Swifties Agree: You ‘Can’t Help But Root’ for Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce.” Fox News reports, “Taylor Swift, Travis Kelce’s PDA Signals NFL Player is ‘Endgame’ for Pop Star: expert.” And in a shocking turn of events, CNN seems to be in lockstep with Fox News saying, “Opinion: Travis Kelce is Happy to be Mr. Taylor Swift.” These organizations are devoting enormous amounts of time and money into having the latest reporting on Taylor and Travis because they know there is an audience for it. That investment of resources is poised to have a pretty hefty return on it. Not from me though, I won’t do it.
These love birds are just a another two in a long, long line of pop-culture phenoms that I don’t think it’s possible for me to care less about. Kardashians? No thank you. The British royal family? Hard pass. (I am seriously trying to come up with another example and I can’t even think of one.) Taylor Swift is making money hand over fist. Ticket prices for her concerts are dumbfoundingly expensive. For some fans, it’s cheaper to fly across the country and go to a concert in the Midwest than to buck up for a local show. Travis Kelce is probably the best position player on a team that has been to the Super Bowl three of the last four years and walked away with the Lombardi Trophy twice. I’m a big fan of Taylor’s music and when Travis isn’t playing the Jets, it is a pleasure to watch him play. That doesn’t mean I should have to care about their personal lives!
So, no. I will not write about Taylor and Travis. I will stick to my guns and won’t sully these pages with that malarkey. And yet, here we are. As Groucho Marx said, “Those are my principles, and if you don’t like them … well, I have others.”
